People counting on CCTV: count every person and vehicle going in and out

Line crossing and counting turns a camera you already have into a counter. You draw a line across a gate, door, aisle or driveway on the camera view. Every time a person, vehicle or animal crosses it, Eye AI logs the direction and the time. It is for site managers, security heads, retail and facility teams who need to know how many came in, how many went out, and when, without standing there with a clicker.

ILLUSTRATION WITH SAMPLE DATA

The problem

Gate registers and manual tallies miss people and vehicles, and nobody can check them later.

Management asks "how busy were we on Tuesday?" and the honest answer is a guess.

Footage exists, but counting from recordings means hours of someone watching a screen.

How it works

  1. Pick the camera view.We use a camera you already have at the gate, door or lane.
  2. Draw the line. You mark where people and vehicles pass. You choose which side is "in".
  3. Eye AI watches all day. Each crossing is recorded with direction, type of object and time. The analysis runs on a computer at your site.
  4. Read the numbers.Open the dashboard on your network to see counts by hour, day and gate.

What you get

  • In/out counts by hour, day and gate. See the busy hours and the quiet ones, and compare one gate with another.
  • Direction, object type and colour. Know whether it was a person or a vehicle, which way it went, and the vehicle colour as an estimate.
  • Live count of what is in view. A running picture of what the camera sees right now.
  • Searchable history and CSV export, through Event history and reports, for management reports.

Where it is used

Honest limits

  • Small or far objects at night, and people half-hidden behind others, can be missed or merged into one.
  • A camera angle that looks straight down the lane, or a line drawn where people bunch together, will give weaker counts than a clear side or overhead view.
  • Rain, glare, headlights and a dirty lens all reduce accuracy.
  • Vehicle colour is an estimate and changes under coloured light.
  • We publish no accuracy figure yet. We will share one only after measuring it on validation footage, with the conditions.
  • Eye AI also runs a separate motion check on each line. If something moves and nothing was logged, you see a possible miss. See the safety net.

The free camera-readiness check tells you before you commit whether your view is good enough.

Questions about line crossing and counting

Can it count in both directions at the same gate?

Yes. The same line records crossings each way, so you get separate in and out counts.

Do I need new cameras?

No. It works on your existing network cameras that provide a video stream. The free check confirms your view is suitable.

Does it count people and vehicles separately?

Yes. Each crossing is logged with its object type, so people, vehicles and animals are not mixed together.

Can I get the numbers into a spreadsheet?

Yes. Filter the history by date, hour or gate and export to CSV.

Does video leave my site?

No. The analysis runs on a computer at your site, and the dashboard is password-protected on your network.
